Early Literacy
Instead of reading
Early literacy is a vital component of kindergarten readiness. Children who are exposed to literacy-rich environments from an early age are more likely to be successful in school. It is essential to introduce children to the alphabet, phonics, and basic reading skills, such as rhyming and word recognition.
As parents, we can help our children develop early literacy skills by reading to them regularly. We can also provide them with age-appropriate books and encourage them to practice writing and letter recognition. Additionally, there are many online resources and apps that can help children develop early literacy skills in a fun and engaging way.
Sight-words
Sight words, also known as high-frequency words, are common words that frequently appear in written texts. These words are considered essential for early readers to recognize and understand quickly, as they often do not follow regular phonetic patterns or can't be easily sounded out. Sight words are typically short and common function words, such as "the," "and," "is," "he," "she," "that," and "it."
The reason these words are called “sight words” is that they are expected to be recognized “at sight” without needing to be sounded out or decoded. The goal is for children to develop automatic recognition and instant recall of these words, which helps to improve reading fluency and comprehension.
Educators often use various techniques and strategies to teach sight words, such as repetitive exposure, word games, flashcards, and sentence building. By being able to recognize these words quickly, young readers can focus more on understanding the overall meaning of a text rather than getting stuck on individual words.
It’s worth noting that different educational systems and curricula may have slightly different lists of sight words, but there is a considerable overlap in the words that are commonly taught as sight words.
